"What if Akhenaten had succeeded?"
Hello Ian

Egypt, I believe consider's itself to be a monotheist nation although not of Akhenaten's making.
To attempt to consider the what if's if he had succeeded with the history monotheism has wrecked upon the area I am not worthy to try to consider. So I won't.
I think he was attempting to turn back time not attempting to become a monotheist. Only the royal family could worship the Aten. The nobles had to worship the royal family not Amun or any other god/goddess. They the royal family interceded with the Aten on behalf of their worshipers and bestowed the Aten's blessings when merited.
That is how it was in the Early Period back when Pharaoh's were really treated like they were god's on Earth and if you hoped to go to paradise when you died. You had better be really helpful to your Pharaoh. To me Akhenaten, was attempting to deny the people the right to worship as they believed with his power grab.
That right of the Egyptian people to worship has they wished had been a gift of the First Dynastic Period.
