In the long passageway to the Osireion (begun by Sety I, c.1290-1279 B.C.E.) at Abydos, is this relief carving of the god Nun lifting up the Solar Barque of Khepry [pronounced kep-ree] (the rising sun), a scene from the Book of Gates. The ancient Egyptians believed that Nun was the primordial waters from which creation took place. At dawn, Khepry, the morning sun symbolized as a scarab beetle, was born out of these waters. The Egyptians observed that the scarab beetle pushed along a ball of dung (in which it had laid its eggs) and buried it in the sand. From this ball, seemingly by spontaneous generation, emerged baby beetles. Khepry, which means "to become," thus became a potent symbol of rebirth and regeneration.

Nun was the god who personified the primeval waters, the chaos which existed before there was shape and form, the dark liquid mass out of which there appeared the creator-god.

Nun is regarded as having no surface, stretching into infinity. Not subject to cosmic order (Maat), Nun’s watery chaos is even so considered beneficial. Amenhotep III constructed a pool at Thebes in which the god delighted.

Nun is without peer in the Egyptian cosmos, as he is regarded as the “father of the gods”.

His consort is Naunet.

Once the creation of the universe had taken place, Nun continued to exist beyond its boundaries, within the waters of the earth and those of the river Nile.

He was written with the hieroglyphic sign for water and represented by the purifying lakes which belonged to every temple. He also played a part in the rituals for laying out the foundation of a new temple structure.

In iconography, Nun is depicted with his arms thrust out at the sun at the twelfth hour, a bearded man waist-high in water, supporting the sacred solar barque Manjet



Nun had no temples or priesthood, and was never worshipped as a personified deity. Instead he was regarded as present in the sacred lakes that were to be found at all temples.

Don't you think this is all simuliar with the Big Bang Theory? I understand the primordial water's ... i like to view it as also the womb in which we are born.

I find this sentence very confusing in the discription of Nun. I was under the impression that all of Egyptian society was based on the concept of Ma'at, of the controlling or subduing of Chaos. It states that even the waters of Chaos were considered, in a way, to be beneficial. Why would one god be exempt from that belief? Sekhmet--can you offer any explanation?
