So very few know of this exciting Queen from the 1st Dynasty i want to share about her.
She was Queen of Egypt, wife to Pharaoh Djet, the 3rd Pharaoh of the Two Lands after Narmer unified them. She was the mother of Pharaoh Den, who came to the throne of the Two Lands when just a small child.
Today Queen Merneith is credited with being the first female ruler of the Two Lands. She ruled in her son's name after her husband's death. What a women she must have been to hold the Two Lands together while her son grew up. This is very early Egypt, Barons who once ruled without the permission of Pharaoh not all that long ago must have made it hard for her.
There is some scholarly consideration that the stories about Isis, Osiris, and Horus are based upon her, her son and husband. Maybe but we will never know for sure.
She wisely used the assistance of several of her husband's close advisors, during her rule. They recieved fine burials as their reward from Den, who they continued to serve when he came of age.
Den himself buried his mother when the time came to be. Her tomb, that her son provided for her was very fine and grand. So much so that when it was first discovered by European explorers. They thought it was the tomb of a King.
Her son Den, ruled a very long time, enriched his nation greatly in battles and oversaw a period of great cultural achievement.
Anyone interested in learning more about this great woman and ruler can do so in Early Dynastic Egypt by Toby A.H. Wilkinson.
